For the Patient/Client

Lia the Tattooer uses her skills to bridge the gap that sometimes comes between clinician and patient to help the patient move forward with their journey and close this chapter of their life.

Below are some of the most asked questions from patients over the years.

1. Does insurance cover medical tattooing?

In some cases, yes. Areola tattooing after mastectomy is sometimes considered part of breast reconstruction, which can be covered by insurance. Coverage for scar or stretch mark camouflage is less common, but you may be able to submit documentation to your provider. I can provide receipts and supporting paperwork if you’d like to check with your insurance company.

2. How many sessions will I need?

Most procedures are completed in 1–2 sessions, depending on skin type, scar tissue, and the amount of blending needed. Sometimes it can take multiple sessions and need touchups over the years depending on many factors and variables that your technician can address on a case by case basis through a face-to-face consultation.

Some clients may return for a touch-up after healing to perfect the results.

3. Does it hurt?

Discomfort is usually minimal. I use professional techniques, numbing agents if needed, and adapt the process to your comfort level. Many clients compare it to a light scratching sensation.

4. How long does it take to heal?

Healing typically takes 7–10 days for the surface to close and a few weeks for full pigment settling. During this time, the tattoo may scab and lighten before the true healed color shows.  We ask a full month for healing before any changes are made.

5. How long will the results last?

Results usually last 3–5 years before needing a color refresh. Skin type, sun exposure, and lifestyle factors can affect longevity.

6. Will it look natural?

Yes! My goal is to create realistic, natural-looking results. I use custom pigment matching and advanced blending techniques so your tattoo blends seamlessly with your skin.

7. Are there any risks or side effects?

As with any tattoo or cosmetic procedure, there’s a small risk of infection or irritation. I follow strict health and safety protocols, and I’ll send you home with aftercare instructions to minimize any issues.

8. Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Not usually. Patients can book directly with me. However, many clients come to me after being referred by their doctor or surgeon as the final step in their healing journey.

9. How should I prepare for my appointment?

Avoid tanning, heavy sun exposure, or harsh skin treatments on the area before your appointment. Make sure the skin is healthy and fully healed from any surgeries (typically at least 12 months post-surgery for areola restoration).

10. Can I see examples of your work?

Yes! Check out the Before & After Gallery on this site. It’s the best way to see how transformative these procedures can be.
